Data-informed Coaching Conversations
Time and time again, research shows that great leaders are great coaches; they listen, ask open-ended questions and consistently help others find their own way forward, rather than telling them what to do.
In addition to being a core content piece of many leadership development programs, leveraging external coaches is a popular, scalable and effective way of developing existing leaders - particularly in big, international organizations. We have observed a rise in leadership development initiatives - from first time to frontline to senior leaders - that include either group coaching or 1:1 sessions with an external, certified coach.
Inherent in coaching is that one works with the individual to explore their thoughts and reflections on where they are now, where they want to go and steps they can take to make progress.
We have recently been involved in several initiatives involving coaching and stumbled across an interesting insight; with Yomento, a leader can augment their own, personal perspective of where they need to develop based on input from their colleagues and direct reports.
To some extent, this approach can also be enabled through 360s - external feedback from other people (managers, peers, direct reports) provides a leader with insights into their current strengths and gaps, which they can bring into the coaching conversation. However, what we have found is that Yomento’s focus on concrete behaviors, and frequency of action, adds both nuance and practicality to a coaching session. It allows the leader to share, discuss and reflect on what their colleagues specifically need from them, more often, in the flow of work.
It helps focus the conversation on the current reality, provides more actionable insights when reflecting on options and makes the way forward more concrete and doable. For the coach, it also provides a clear perspective on how the coachee is currently perceived by others. It allows them to dig deeper, ask better questions and challenge assumptions.
